Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Group incl. corps and ladder badges, 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.

XVIII Corps badge with embossed regimental designation, "44th Mass. Vo. Inf.," hanging from bar embossed with "CO. A." 1 3/4 in. total lg. (surface soiling, few spots, small area of rusting to top bar). -- 4-bar ladder badge all together reading "Co. A. / 44 / Mass. / Vol. Inf.," with tassel drop. 4 1/2 in. total lg. including tassel (some spotting/areas of discoloration, general surface wear). -- Together, 2 Co. A, 44th Massachusetts badges. 

Large format half portrait, likely copied from a tintype, featuring a young soldier wearing cartridge box, oval "US" belt plate, and bayonet. 5 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (soiling, toning, clipped corners, general wear). Verso pencil inscription reads, in part, "Your Grandfather, Henry G. Hampton, Private in the army - Age 17...He became an officer in the 44th Massachusetts Volunteers." -- Large format full standing portrait, likely copied from a tintype, featuring a young boy. 5 x 7 1/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (toning, dampstaining, wear to edges and corners). Verso pencil inscription reads "Your Grandfather, Age 11." -- Together, 2 large format albumen portraits tentatively identified as the same person, Pvt. Henry G. Hampton, by verso inscription. An HDS search locates 15 Henry Hamptons in the Union Army, but returned no records for a Henry Hampton serving in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.
