A group of 3 items associated with the 7th Maryland Volunteers, highlighted by a document endorsed by Generals John R. KENLY, John NEWTON, and George G. MEADE. Rappahannock Station, Virginia. 23 August 1863. On letterhead of "Head-Quarters, 7th Maryland Vols." 3pp, approx. 8 x 10 in. (creasing, light soil, 2nd page with endorsements nearly completely separated at folds). Col. Edwin H. Webster, Commanding 7th Regt. Maryland Vols., writes to Lt. Col. C. Kingsbury Jr., A.A.G. 1st A. Corps, regarding the unsanctioned departure of Captain Richard R. Brouner from his regiment. Webster describes the circumstances surrounding Brouner's abrupt leave of command, and recommends he not be returned to his regiment. Endorsements include Major General John Newton who indicates that one is only removed from the service "with the consent of the Government I therefore report this officer to Hd Qrs. Army of the Potomac as a 'deserter' and trust that he can be apprehended and brought to trial as such." Meade signs (Geo. G. Meade") the endorsement which was written in another hand "With the request that this officer may be returned to his regt for trial." 31 August 1863.

HDS indicates that Captain Richard R. Brouner was listed as AWOL 8/17/1863 and later court martialed for his actions. He was dismissed from the 7th MD and mustered into the NY 165th Infantry in February 1864.

Kenly. -- Special Orders No. 47 detailing an officer of the 7th Maryland Volunteers for Recruiting service. Signed ("E.D. Townshend") by Edward Townshend, Assistant Adjutant General.
