Lot Description
[KENTON, Simon (1755-1836).] An 1809 document signed by Simon Kenton's lawyer, Joel Walker, and another signed by his brother, John Kenton, in 1812.

WALKER, Joel. Manuscript receipt signed ("Joel Walker") as "attorney in fact" for Simon Kenton, [Champaign County, Ohio?], 2 May 1809. 1p, 8 x 3 in. (sight) framed to 11 x 4 1/2 in. (creasing, light soil, unexamined outside frame).

"Received of John Morris previous to this date Twelve Dollars thirty seven and a half cents being his store account with Simon Kenton witness my hand this 2nd day of May 1809. Joel Walker...."

[With:] KENTON, John (1751-1829). Manuscript affidavit signed ("John Kenton"), [Mason County, KY], 19 July 1812. 1p, approx. 9 x 8 in., housed under two-sided glass (creasing, toning, loss along one edge line). Docketed on verso. 

"Agreeably to the order of the Mason Circuit Court at their last November term I have recd of the Clrk of the said Court the following exhibits filed by me in the suit Carswell & Jackson vs. myself &etc...." Document then lists items including deeds from Simon Kenton, copies of decrees, and a newspaper.

Legendary frontiersman Simon Kenton (1855-1836) spent much of his life adventuring between the frontiers of the Ohio and Kentucky wilderness. By 1810, his family had permanently settled near Urbana, Ohio, though his legal difficulties related to land disputes and debts continued there as well as in his former home state.
