Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 30-star American parade flag. Ca 1848-1850.

20 x 27 in. cotton flag with 30 printed stars configured in 6/6/6/6/6 pattern (toning, occasional soiling, light edge wear). The flag has very wide selvage hoist and fly ends, with "62 cts" handwritten in hoist selvage. Professionally mounted using stitch on board.

Wisconsin was designated a territory in 1836 and during the next few years the region’s population grew rapidly from an influx of German, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants. The rich soil and agricultural potential also attracted a considerable number of easterners who arrived via the Erie Canal and Great Lakes. After rejecting statehood propositions four times, the citizens of Wisconsin voted to become a state in May 1848.

This flag has been exhibited at a museum and is documented in the book The Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spirit, Richard Pierce, LLC, 2005 (page 15).

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
