In 1925, Dean Cornwell visited the Holy Land and created several paintings, which were eventually used for various books and stories with Middle East and Biblical themes. The present lot was illustrated in the sixth of a series of articles about paintings of places in the Holy Land published by Good Housekeeping Magazine in 1926. The article was written by William Lyon Phelps to describe Christ entering Jerusalem through the famed gate on Palm Sunday.
Condition Report
Framed: 44 x 33 inches.
Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust, with more visible dust along the lower edge; canvas is not lined and somewhat loose on the stretcher; a small patch in the lower center verso, with a corresponding area of inpainting on the recto; two pinpoint paint losses along extreme upper left edge; one pinpoint paint loss in lower left corner, within brown; extreme lower left canvas corner is slightly bent and exhibits a small paint loss. Under UV light: inpainting within aforementioned area in lower center; small spots of inpainting scattered along lower edge; several lines of inpainting extending along extreme center left to lower left edge; pinpoint spots of inpainting in right wall of tower.
