Lot Description
[DAVIS, Jefferson (1808-1889)]. 3 CDVs of Jefferson DAVIS, Varina DAVIS, and Alexander H. Stephens.
Standing portrait of Jefferson Davis posed with his hand resting on a book (few small punctures to upper edge, light wear to lower left corner of print; mount with light toning and wear to edges and corners). New York: E. Anthony, n.d. Verso bears Anthony's imprint, with negative credit to Brady's National Portrait Gallery, along with English and Spanish identifications of subject in different hands: "Jeff Davis" and "Presidente de la Confederacion del Sur."

Standing portrait of Varina Davis posed before a painted backdrop, wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and holding a fan (toning, minor puncture to upper edge; mount with some spotting and light wear to edges and corners, verso with some surface loss). New York: E. & H. T. Anthony, n.d. Mount recto bears blue pencil identification in Spanish: "Sra del President del Sur - Davis." Verso bears Anthony's imprint along with penciled identification in English.

Verso bears Anthony's imprint, with negative credit to Brady's National Portrait Gallery, along with English and Spanish identifications of subject in different hands: "A. H. Stephens" and "Vice Presidente de la Confederacion del Sur."

Alexander H. Stephens served as Davis's vice president of the Confederate States from 1861-1865. After the war, he was elected Governor of Georgia, serving just from 1882 until his death in 1883.
