Lot Description
1862-Dated U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber by Millard
American Civil War
35" curved single-edged blade with a 26.5" stopped median fuller and an 18" secondary fuller near the spine. 41" in overall length with a 6" hilt mounted with a cast brass two-branch guard with knuckle bow and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Grooved wood grip covered in leather with 12 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso of blade marked in an oval cartouche J.D. MILLARD/CLAYVILLE, NY. Obverse ricasso marked U.S./C.E.W./1862. The initials are those of US arsenal contract arms sub-inspector Charles E. Wilson who inspected Millard contract sabers in 1862. His inspection marks are also found struck twice on the pommel cap. The saber is accompanied by a steel scabbard with no visible inspection marks.

Condition Report
Good. Blade moderately oxidized with scattered pitting nearer the guard and mottled discoloration along its length. Guard with a rich, uncleaned patina. Grip with moderate wear to the leather covering, showing flaked loss. Wire wrap intact, as is the leather throat washer. Scabbard heavily oxidized and showing moderate amounts of surface rust, with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
