Allen & Wheelock Drop Breech Rifle
.38 RF. 26" octagon to round barrel. SN: 362. No finish remaining, smooth walnut forend and straight gripped smooth walnut stock with crescent buttplate. Single shot dropping breech metallic cartridge rifle. Two line barrel mark reads ALLEN & WHEELOCK/ALLEN'S PATENT SEPT. 18, 1860. Matching serial (assembly) numbers on barrel under forend, inside forend and on breech lever mechanism. Frame serial number not visible due to wrist repair. Designed for the Allen patent adjustable rear sight system, which is missing. An incorrect dovetailed rear sight base is also present in the barrel cut and an incorrect replacement blade front sight is present. Trap door in butt for tool is empty.

Condition Report
Fair. Bore is fair, moderately oxidized and lightly pitted throughout with strong rifling. Metal with no finish remaining, showing moderate amounts of scattered surface oxidation with a mottled brownish-gray patina. Mechanically functional action. Wood with moderate wear, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars and a period of use repair at the wrist with an added metal band for support.
