Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. CDV of Surgeon Henry Wheaton Rivers, Rhode Island 1st and 4th Infantry. Providence, Rhode Island: Manchester, Bro. & Angell, n.d.

2 1/4 x 3 3/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount (very light surface abrasions). Photographer's imprint on mount verso. Pencil inscription identifies the subject. 

Henry Wheaton Rivers (1814-1868) enlisted as an assistant surgeon on 17 April 1861 and was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 1st Rhode Island Infantry on 2 May 1861, promoted to surgeon on 7 June 1861. He was mustered out on 2 August 1861 at Providence and later commissioned as a surgeon into Field & Staff of the 4th Rhode Island Infantry on 30 October 1861. An extensive list of his detachments, returns, and special duties are recorded, including service with the Army of the Potomac as attending surgeon in November 1862 and to the Gettysburg Division, 18th A.C. on 16 September 1863.
