Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of CDVs including Civil War officers and enlisted men.
Signed CDV portrait of Brigadier General Walter Q. Gresham (some light toning and spotting, upper corners clipped). Signed in ink on verso, "W.Q. Gresham. / Brig. General U.S.A. / comdg 3rd Brig. 4th Div. / 17th Army Corps." -- CDV vignetted bust portrait of a man wearing shoulder straps indicating the rank of second lieutenant, identified by verso pencil inscription as Lieutenant Elbert Baldwin, 12th Indiana Infantry Regiment (some toning to image, soiling and wear to mount). Straps and buttons are tinted blue and yellow. -- CDV vignetted bust portrait of an officer tentatively identified by consignor label as James Kent Stone. Boston: G.D. Hamilton, n.d. (surface soiling, toning, and spotting to image, with wear to mount edges and corners). Hamilton's imprint in blue on verso. -- And 2 additional CDVs including one with Mrs. Mary Madden's studio imprint on verso. -- Together, 5 albumen photographs, each 2 1/4 x 3 5/8 in. or smaller, on cardstock mounts.
[With:] 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 in. remnant of a clipped CDV portrait of a seated man with a wildly bushy beard and intense gaze (clipped on all four sides, with clipped piece of blue paper partially attached at verso). Part of photographer's studio imprint visible on verso, though not enough information remains to discern the identity of said photographer. Accompanied by a cut-out paper CDV frame with decorative border and ink inscription on verso reading, "compliments of Samuel / Wolf D C.E. Diehl" (upper corners clipped, discoloration throughout).
[With:] 4 1/8 x 5 1/4 in. hand-colored silver print of a Union officer on cardstock, with loose wax overlay of same image (wax piece with loss, crackling, and adhesive residue, cardstock with surface soiling, heavy adhesive repair especially to verso, and clipping and wear to edges). Housed unsealed under mat, glass, and preserver, no case.
