Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. West Virginia Honorably Discharged medal presented to James H. Smell, Co. C., 14th West Virginia Infantry.
New York: A. Demarest, [1866]. Suspender width 1 5/8 in., suspended medal diameter 1 1/2 in, overall length 3 1/8 in.
Suspender reads "Honorably Discharged" above a "WV" entwined monogram. Obverse of medal Lady Liberty conferring a crown of laurels to a soldier above the State Seal of West Virginia and "1861. 1865." Reverse reads: "Presented by the State of West Virginia." with a laurel wreath and maker's mark. The rim is engraved," Jas. H. Smell Co. C 14th Reg Inf Vols." Backed by red, white, and blue tricolor ribbon.
James H. Smell enlisted on 25 August 1862 as private, mustering into Company C of the 14th West Virginia Infantry. The regiment saw action mostly in northern Virginia and the border area between Virginia and newly-formed West Virginia, including the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain and the Third Battle of Winchester. In 1866, the state of West Virginia authorized the minting of these medals to honor its Union Civil War soldiers.
