Lot Description
[DOUGLASS, Frederick (1818-1895)]. ROBERTS, J.B., photographer. CDV of Frederick Douglass. Rochester, NY, ca 1867.

2 1/4 x 3 7/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount (print with toning, light surface soil, and possibly clipped upper edge; mount with light edge/corner wear). Roberts' 58 State Street imprint to verso.

Douglass is pictured wearing a dark jacket over a stark white collar, looking toward the camera, his hair having developed a fair amount of gray. Possibly a previously unknown image captured during the same sitting as the image catalogued as #57 (with alternate vignetting and subtle differences) in Picturing Frederick Douglass, with unknown photographer. That image is held at the Rochester Public Library.
