Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 38-star American parade flag with "Great Star" pattern. Ca 1877-1890.

11 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. silk flag with 38 printed stars configured in the "Great Star" pattern, including a central star and a star in each corner (vibrant colors, near excellent condition). Professionally mounted using stitch on board.

A beautiful and delicate design more like a great flower than a Great Star. First appearing on flags in 1818, this starry pattern was in use for a longer period of time than any other form of the Stars and Stripes.

This flag has been exhibited at several museums and is documented in the book The Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spirit, Richard Pierce, LLC, 2005 (page 26).
