Lot Description

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. A group of 2 war-date receipts for supplies, comprising:

4 1/4 x 8 1/4 in. manuscript pay order in the amount of 22 pounds one shilling and ten pence made out to Joseph Smith for supplying the state of Connecticut with saltpetre. Hartford [CT]. 18 February 1777. Docketed on verso.

Saltpetre was a major component of gunpowder and was scarce in the Revolutionary War until French imports were brought into the Colonies. Until then, Washington's Army relied on individuals to provide the much-needed resource.

[With:] 6 x 7 1/4 in. manuscript receipt whereby Quartermaster Jonas Whiting affirms receipt of 18 pairs of shoes from Stephen Parker, pay master of Colonel Jackson's regiment for the use of Colonel Henley's regiment. Camp Pawtuxet, 15 October 1778. Docketed on verso.

Both items in generally good condition with some creasing and expected wear and toning given age. Receipt for shoes with later adhesive remnant along right vertical edge line.
