This June, Freeman’s | Hindman Invites the Next Generation of Collectors to Discover the Visionary Collection of Sidney Rothberg

This June 24 and 25, 2025, Freeman’s | Hindman will unveil Parts III and IV of What Do You See? The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, offering more than 300 remarkable works by globally renowned artists, most of which have not been seen in public for 60 to 80 years. This highly anticipated reveal follows the acclaimed multi-million dollar sales of February 2024 and promises to be an extraordinary opportunity for both seasoned and aspiring collectors to purchase unique works of art before they go out of the public eye again.

From Pierre-Auguste Renoir to Romare Bearden, René Magritte to Henry Moore, Jane Piper to Betty Parsons, the Rothberg Collection spans genres, movements, and media—bringing to market a rare synthesis of quality and accessibility. With price points starting at $500 and rising to $25,000, these sales are a golden opportunity for young and emerging collectors to secure works by blue-chip names without the typical barrier to entry. It is reminiscent of Rothberg’s own beginnings, as he started to collect as a young student deployed in France over WWII, then as a college student in Philadelphia and later as a young professional in New York City. Throughout his lifetime, Rothberg amassed works in the millions but also collected them at lower price points.

“Sid Rothberg was a collector’s collector,” says Raphaël Chatroux, Head of Sale. “But above all, he believed in the power of art to spark curiosity. This sale is more than a legacy—it’s an invitation.”

A VISIONARY COLLECTION TAILORED TO ALL LEVELS OF COLLECTING

Whether you're beginning your collecting journey or expanding an existing portfolio, this curated collection is rich with accessible works that embody Rothberg’s playful, joyful, and inquisitive spirit. Highlights include:

  • Honoré Daumier, Le Buveur Chantant, est. $25,000–$40,000
  • Jean Hugo, 10 gouaches ranging from $800–$1,500
  • Romare Bearden, Figures in a Landscape, est. $8,000–$12,000
  • René Magritte, Lettre Objet (Le Canal), est. $5,000–$8,000
  • Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Le Cerf-Volant, est. $6,000–$10,000

A deep admirer of the Barnes Foundation and lifelong connoisseur, Rothberg often challenged those around him with the simple but profound question: “What do you see?” Today, his daughter and co-curator of the Collection, Saranne Rothberg carries his curious spirit forward, inviting a new generation to see and collect with passion and confidence. “It is never too late to start a collection” Saranne says. “My father took my daughter and me to auctions at age 4 and hung works at eye level for us to study. Though, I wish everyone could have met my dad in person, I’m overjoyed that a newer generation of collectors are discovering him through this captivating collection and through such bold works of art, some of which were made by artists my father collected long before they were recognized, and admitted in the art world.”
