Lot Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA]--[ENTERTAINMENT]. Real photo postcard of identified Vaudevillle entertainers, incl. interracial couple Sherman and Lulu Coates. 28 July 1906.

5 3/8 x 3 1/2 in. real photo postcard (toning, light edge wear). Inscribed numbers above each subject, corresponding to listed identities on verso. Verso also bears ink inscribed date "July 28th 06" and later pencil caption.

Vaudeville entertainers Lulu and Sherman Coates were part of an act called the Watermelon Trust Acrobats in the early part of the twentieth century, with fellow performer, James Grundy, and his wife. When that group split up in 1914, Lulu went on to form the Crackerjacks, a troupe of dancers and acrobats who continued under the same name, even after Coates's retirement, until 1952.
