Lot Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - JIM CROW]. "In Dixie-Land" playing cards. Cincinnati, OH: Fireside Game Co., Cincinnati Game Co., 1897.
2 1/2 x 3 7/16 in. deck of playing cards. (Lacking card H4, the direction card, and box; the Crown Card has been labeled in pencil "H4" to replace the lacking card, light soiling.) Labeled in "books" of four, A1-A4 to M1-M4, each with a photogravure image of an African American with titles and captions.
Billed as an "educational" game, the cards use stereotypical depictions and parlance of African Americans prevalent during the rise of Jim Crow. A roundel swamp scene with an alligator surrounded by a design of watermelons, cotton, and possums decorates the versos.
