Lot Description
[GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885)]. Paper balloon lantern with portrait of Grant. Norwalk, OH: Sprague & French, ca 1880.

Each panel 7 1/4 x 23 1/2 in. printed paper (some creasing, separation at join with tear to one panel).

An elaborately decorated paper lantern, likely from the 1880 lead up to the Republican National Convention. Grant did not seek re-election after his second term, but after Hayes's break from the Republican Party and Grant's continued global popularity, the Stalwart faction of the Party sought to seek a third term for Grant. The party, however, was split between Grant and James G. Blaine resulting in the nomination of James Garfield as a compromise candidate.
