Lot Description
[PERIODICALS]. Commemorative scrapbook for the Detroit Free Press.

Scrapbook, 10 x 13.5 in., string-tied spine. The scrapbook is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Detroit Free Press, including Detroit history. Many poems by Edgar A. Guest (1881-1959). Guest was born in England, but immigrated with his family to the US while he was still a boy. He began at the Detroit Free Press as a copy boy. His first poem was published in the Free Press in 1898. He was popular throughout the country during the first half of the 20th century, with many of his 11,000 poems being optimistic and inspirational for many. Considering this time was one of two world wars and a Great Depression, his popularity is understandable. He was named the only (so far) Poet Laureate of Michigan.

This history and commemoration of the Free Press is almost professionally assembled, almost as though it was a mock-up as part of a proposal for a publisher.
