Lot Description
[ADVERTISING]. An extensive collection of trade cards and postcards featuring depictions of beautiful women, including:
96 postcards, most used, but a few unused. Many of the women are drawn in the romantic "Gibson girl" style. All postcards seem to be Italian in origin and were mailed to Italian addresses. Artists with readable names include: T. Corell; Adolfo Busi (1891-1977); Simonetty; Mauza; Bianchi. Just a couple have advertising on the back (coffee).
After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Adolfo Busi began a painting career, mostly in portraits. About 1920 he turned to graphic illustration for advertising, creating campaigns for the likes of Barilla (with babies riding pasta, children reaping wheat to making the dough and pasta.)
Achille Mauzan (1883-1952) moved to Italy from his natal French Riviera in 1905 and became associated with the Art Deco movement in Italy. He especially designed posters (over 2,000 of them) and postcards.
