Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS] -- [SOUTHWEST & ALASKA]. A group of 6 photographs, incl. female Native American subjects and view of Sitka, Alaska, incl. Indian Town.
Portrait of "Ellen, Clayoquot," First Nations Woman, Vancouver Island, Canada, n.d. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. silver gelatin photograph (minor loss to corners, light creasing to edges). “Clayoquot” is written on the verso, who were an indigenous group that lived in the Vancouver Island region and joined with the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations.
[With:] Navajo Blanket Weaver. N.d. 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. silver gelatin photograph mounted on 5 1/4 x 6 1/4 in. board (some staining to board, corner and edge wear).
[With:] Mounted Native American woman in beaded dress. N.d. 6 x 8 in. silver gelatin photograph of a woman posed with a Wild West Show set behind her (minor loss to lower right corner). She and the horse are wearing items from different tribal groups – a Crow beaded dress, seated in a unique Plains double horned saddle. The horse has a Northern Nez Perce Beaded Martingale and a fringed saddlebag. A woman near the right edge of the photo is holding a sleeping baby.
[With:] 2 photographs relating to Louise Bear, a Sioux woman, ca 1909. Real photo postcard of a seated woman holding a child identified as Louise Bear on the verso (few stains, corner wear) and a 3 x 5 in. photograph identified on the verso as a group under a gospel tent identifying Louise Bear as “The interpreter in my S.S. class. I eat at her house once in a while” (toning, corner loss to print).
[Also with:] HARRISON BROS., photographers. Sitka Harbor. Juneau, AK: ca 1889. 7 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. boudoir photograph on cardstock mount (some toning to image, adhesive/paper residue to upper left edge of image and mount, wear to mount edges and corners). Harrison Bros. imprint stamped on verso. Ink inscriptions on image and mount recto identify various locations and subjects visible in the photograph including "US Vessell [sic] Pinta," "Siezed sealing schooners," "Indiantown," "US Naval Warehouse," and others. Various pencil inscriptions on verso.
Together, 6 photographs, condition generally good unless otherwise noted.
