3 stereoviews of Fort Garland, including: "412 - Fort Garland." Showing adobe walls. -- "413 Fort Garland - Interior." Note on verso indicates that the trees and grass are kept alive by periodic flooding of the area by a ditch to the river. -- Commanding officer and staff at Fort Garland with a description of the adobe house, occupied the previous year by General Pope.
[With:] View of the photography crew camping at the foot of "Old Baldy," 14,000+ ft. above sea level. -- Views of officers returning with their fish catch - titled in negative "411 Return from Fishing."

Fort Garland was established by the US Army in June 1858 to protect settlers from the Utes in the San Luis Valley, which was then part of the New Mexico Territory. The fort was abandoned in 1883 following the confinement of the tribes to Indian reservation in Utah territory and Colorado.
