A Large Pair of Chinese Famille Verte Porcelain Figures of Fu Lions
LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
晚清/民國 素三彩佛獅塑坐一對
depicted seated upright, the female and male each resting one clawed front paw on a cub and reticulated ball, respectively. The yellow bodies dappled in black suggesting coarse coats, with long manes of conical curls descending from the crown of the head to furls at the tail, having wide open mouths bearing fangs, broad snouts, and large movable eyes; each wearing a ribbon collar beaded with gilt double gourds ornaments, their muscular shoulders and hindquarters decorated with spurts of flame wisps. Each raised above a rectangular stand painted on all sides with flowers and butterflies against a black ground.
