FIRST EDITION of the "earliest history of this region" (Howes). Hewitt, a Presbyterian minister, lived in Charleston for several years. He remained loyal to the King during the Revolutionary War, and he was expelled and his property seized in 1777. His comprehensive account of the economy and society of the two colonies includes a critique of slavery and the colonial reaction to the Stamp Act.
