FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Olmsted first published the accounts of his journey through the seaboard slave states in the New York Daily Times under the pseudonym “Yeoman.”. After making a second journey to expand his observations, he published his observations in book form, endeavoring to “correct the erroneous impressions of the earlier” which he noted was “too fault-finding” (Preface).
