FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with "A" on the copyright page. FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET, without the photographer credit on the rear panel. Published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War, For Whom the Bell Tolls is based on Hemingway's experiences as a war correspondent, and tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War.
