8vo. Original decorated brown cloth (upper hinge starting, some staining, slight bubbling to cloth lower board). Provenance: Julia D. Minzesheimer (signature on front blank leaf); Miss magdeline (signature rear flyleaf); Louise Northam (signature rear flyleaf); sold Brentano's with their ticket.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of James' novel, which has been adapted several times for stage and film. The Portrait of a Lady, first published serially in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880-1881, received immediate critical acclaim.
