8vo. Half-title; one folding letterpress table. (Some spotting.) Original brown blind-stamped cloth, spine gilt-lettered (wear with minor losses to spine ends and joints, upper hinge just starting). Provenance: John St. James (signatures on flyleaf and front blank, 1860).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with two quotations facing title-page. Darwin's work "marked a turning point, not only in the history of science, but in the history of ideas in general, for there is no field of human intellectual endeavor that has not been influenced by the thought and fact of evolution" (DSB III, p.571).
