8vo. 7 heliotype plates with arabic numerals, 3 folding, numerous woodblocks in text; 2 advertisement leaves at end, dated November 1872. (Light soiling to a few leaves.) Original green cloth, covers with blind frame, spine gilt (some light rubbing and wear, hinges just starting, corners and top edge of boards bumped).
FIRST EDITION, second issue, with "htat" reading on p.208, and the last signatures being 2B^1 and 2C^4. The work contains studies of facial and other types of expression in man and mammals, and their relationship to various emotions. "This is an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment" (Freeman). Freeman 1142.
