Lot Description
A Rare 1990 Evander Holyfield Team Issued Gold and Diamond Heavyweight Boxing Championship Ring Presented by Holyfield to Longtime Associate
On October 25, 1990, Evander Holyfield knocked out Mike Tyson conqueror James "Buster" Douglas in the third round to become the Undisputed Heavweight Champion of the World. To commemorate that feat, Holyfield commissioned a limited quantity of championship rings and presented them to his family and closest confidants. Offered here is a ring given to one of those team members, Perry Waldrep. Mr. Waldrep was the general manager of Holyfield's Subaru auto dealership in Morrow, Georgia. The Jostens ring is 14 karat gold, 32.00 dwt. with 25 round brilliant cut diamonds and features the Bible scripture Philippians 4:13 and Holyfield surrounded by UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. The sides are decorated with boxing gloves with HOLYFIELD, OCTOBER 25th 1990 and REAL DEAL, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
The ring is accompanied by Mr. Waldrep's Evander Holyfield Subaru business card, a photo of Waldrep and Holyfield along with hand-written letter from Mr. Waldrep stating:
From: Perry R. Waldrep
To: Whom It May Concern
I met Evander in March 1984 at Ken Sanders Buick in Morrow, Ga. At that time Ken was Evander's manager. I handled all of Evander's personal vehicles along with his family's. I was named General Manager of his Subaru Store he opened in Morrow, Ga. on June 1, 1989, during which time we became close, personal friends. When he won the heavyweight championship by defeating Buster Douglas October 25, 1990, Evander designed his championship ring and ordered enough through Jostens for his family and a few close, personal friends. Evander invited me to his home and personally presented a championship ring to me with my name engraved.
I will always be a die-hard Evander Holyfield fan and will remain his friend forever.
