The bashful model of the work is Ms. Doris Ellen Newlin. Gruppe, a family friend, often spent the summer with her family in Woodstock, New York, in the 1920s. This lot is accompanied by a photograph taken by the model's mother at the time the artwork was executed that has been kept, along with the painting, since the work was completed.
