Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of Civil War signatures highlighted by a signed CDV of Union General William F. Smith.
CDV engraved portrait of Major General William F. Smith (light spotting, toning throughout, with light wear to edges and corners). Signed "W.F. Smith" on recto. Identified in print and pencil on verso. -- CDV portrait of Major General George B. McClellan (significant toning, some discoloration spots, and clipping to edges and corners). Identified in print on verso. -- Together, 2 CDVs on cardstock mounts, 2 5/16 x 3 13/16 in. or smaller.
[With:] RAWLINS, John A. (1831-1869). Letter signed ("Jno A. Rawlins") as Secretary of War, to the Secretary of the Senate. War Department, Washington, DC, 25 March 1869. 2 pages, 8vo, creasing, paper loss. General John Rawlins served only briefly under President Grant, as he died of tuberculosis six months into his tenure, on 6 September 1869. Here, Rawlins asks about the status of 3 nominations for promotion/commission submitted to the President and transmitted to the Senate. -- DIX, John Adams (1798-1879). Autograph letter signed ("John A. Dix"). 1888. 2 pages, 4 7/8 x 8 in., creasing, ink smears, soiling. -- BEARDSLEY, J.A. Autograph letter signed to his brother Samuel Raymond Beardsley (1814-1863). Franklinton, [OH], 25 February 1844. 3 pages, 8vo, docketing to verso, creases. Samuel Beardsley went on to serve in the 24th New York Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant colonel and colonel until mustering out for a commission as captain. He was wounded in action at Groveton, VA, and died of disease in 1863. -- And 11 other autographs, including 3 documents signed and 8 clipped signatures. -- Together, 14 Civil War signatures including Gustavus Adolphus SMITH, General Jefferson Columbus DAVIS, General James Fowler RUSLING, Ebeneezer LEE, CSA Congressman William LANDER, James Dada MORGAN (possible facsimile), and others.
