Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Discharge document for John R. Hartman, 3rd Iowa Cavalry and 56th USCT, signed by General Cyrus BUSSEY. Helena, AK, 14 August 1864.  

8 3/8 x 10 7/8 in. partly printed document (toned, short tears at old folds). Endorsed by Cyrus Bussey (1833-1915).

John R. Hartman of Fairfield, IA, enlisted at 18 years old as private on 15 June 1862 and was mustered in the same day into Company F of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. He re-enlisted on 1 February 1864 and was then transferred at the end of July (confirmed in this document on 14 August 1864) to Company F of the 56th United States Colored Troops, receiving a promotion to 2nd lieutenant. He mustered out with the regiment on 15 September 1866.
