Lot Description
[CHICAGO]. Chicago Home Journal. Pre-fire wooden broadside printing plate.

24 3/4 x 19 1/4 in. carved wooden printing block (areas of surface wear with a nice patina). In reverse, the sign reads "Only 50 Cts. Per Year Chicago Home Journal." Appears to have been used to print a large broadside likely used by newsstands and booksellers to advertise the publication.

No copies of the journal are listed in OCLC, however, the publication is referenced and was syndicated in other newspapers of the late 1850s and 1860s. A syndicated report from the Chicago Home Journal in the 2 July 1858 issues of the Alton Daily Courier (Alton, IL) lists the Journal as  "a Temperance and Educational non-political paper." A lectures series is referenced in the 26 November 1856 issue of The Spirit of the Age (Raleigh, NC): "The system of Lecturing, as is truly remarked by the Chicago Home Journal, has become an institution in America, and we think it is one fraught with great good to the masses of the people."
