A. native of Scotland, Rathie moved to America with his family in 1854. He first worked as a farm hand in New York before moving west to Iowa, where his family owned a farm. Rathie found success as a farmer and land owner in Iowa, and he later moved to South Dakota, where he continued to succeed in agriculture and business.

Many of the CDVs and cabinet cards are credited to photographers from Chicago, IL, San Francisco and Oakland, CA.
