[LATE INDIAN WARS]. A group of manuscript and print ephemera related to the late Indian Wars era and western territories, highlighted by an 1884 petition to President Chester Arthur from prominent New Mexico Territory representatives.
"To His Excellency, Hon. Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States: Believing the public interest will be best subserved thereby, we respectfully recommend the appointment of Gen. S.M. Stickler to the position of Surveyor General for the Territory of New Mexico." Manuscript document signed by 36 businessmen and government officials from the Territory of New Mexico, including newspapermen, an assayer, tobacconist, banker, real estate agent, jeweler, surveyor, druggist, builder, grocer, contractor, and a Superintendent of the Indian School. N.p., n.d. [1884]. 2pp, 8 1/2 x 13 3/4 in. (small tears along folds, light soil). Handstamp indicating petition was received by the Department of the Interior on 3 April 1884. General Stickler did not receive the appointment as Surveyor General.
[With:] "General Court Martial Orders Adjutant Generals office 1879." Orders Nos. 30-75, 8 May 1879 through 22 December 1879, collated in reverse order and bound in homemade paper covers with string closure. -- "Headquarters Mil. Div. of the Missouri, Chicago, Illinois, August 14, 1875." General Orders, No.12. 1p, 5 1/4 x 8 in. Signed in type by R.C. Drum, Assistant Adjutant General. By order of Lt. Gen. Michael V. Sheridan Indian supplies are to be inspected to insure the "quantity and quality of the supplies" in an effort to minimize fraudulent transactions. -- A group of 11 Court-Martial Orders spanning 1887-1892.
[Also with:] Partly printed "Ration Return of E Company 3rd Batt. 18 Regiment of U.S. Inf., for 10 days, commencing the 20th day of November, 1886, and ending the 30 day of November, 1886." Fort Sedgwick, Colorado Territory. Return shows rations for 58 men over a 10-day period and lists all provisions. A scarce piece of ephemera from a short-lived military outpost tasked with protecting emigrants and stage coaches along the Overland Trail. --
