Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 16 daguerreotype portraits of subjects wearing assorted hats, including examples by ANSON, QUINBY, RIDER, STOKES, and JAMES & Co.

Sixth plate portrait of a mustachioed man wearing what appears to be a Glengarry or Balmoral cap with tassels to the back. New York: Anson, n.d. (Few spots and blotches to plate, bit of spotting to mat and preserver; resealed 2001.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case with velvet pad marked for Anson (fully separated at spine, surface wear). Penciled verse on case interior. -- Sixth plate portrait of a young girl wearing a large coat and a wide-brimmed hat. (Spotting and clouding to pate, spotting to mat.) Housed in a Rare Union case, Scallop Shell [Berg 2-67] (surface soiling, light wear). -- Sixth plate portrait of a child wearing colonial garb including hat and curled wig. (Some clouding and one noticeable dent to plate, heavy spotting to mat; retains portions of original seal and resealed with transparent tape.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (separation at spine with fabric repair, surface wear throughout, residue to velvet pad). -- Ninth plate portrait of a man wearing a tall top hat. Boston: James & Co., n.d. (Tarnishing to plate; retains original seal.) Housed under mat, glass, and preserver, no case. Accompanied by advertising card for James & Co.'s 25 Cent Daguerreotype and Ambrotype Rooms. -- And 12 others, including 7 sixth plate examples, 4 ninth plate examples, and one sixteenth plate example, some housed in full cases, others in half or no cases. -- Together, 16 daguerreotype portraits of subjects wearing hats.
