Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Sixth plate ambrotype of Annapolis Naval Cadet Roswell Morey housed in Union case with patriotic motif.

Sixth plate ambrotype. (Some surface spotting to plate, areas of loss to varnish on reverse side of plate.) Housed in Union case with "Union" patriotic motif (edge and corner wear to case, including some small chips). With penciled note identifying the subject as "Roswell (or Koswell) Morey. Annapolis Naval Academy." A "Koswell E. Morey" with a "K" is listed in the Navy Register, p. 626 in the Naval Academy class of 1857.  He apparently graduated and was commissioned Midshipman on 26 September 1857, but his appointment is noted as "Revoked" with no date or reason given. This image depicts Morey as midshipman under the 1852 Regulations with the anchors on the collar and anchor turned sideways on the wheel cap.

[With:] Sixth plate ambrotype of seated subject who appears to be wearing a black, civilian double-breasted frock adorned with buttons. (Heavy tarnish to plate, some fading to image, areas of loss to varnish on reverse side of plate.) Housed in half case (heavy surface wear).
