Upper Missouri Beaded Hide Moccasins
third quarter 19th century

thread and sinew-sewn, one with recycled parfleche sole; beaded abstract geometric design in colors of cobalt, white, translucent green, translucent red, translucent marigold, pea green, and greasy yellow

length 9-3/4 inches

This plate shows three pairs of Indian-decorated shoes, all patterned differently than any Indian footwear. On the left are upper-Missouri-style men's slippers, most likely made by the Arikara. One is turned to show the sole of buffalo rawhide, cut to the white man's preferred pattern. (Hanson 1994: 141)
