Lot Description
Western Apache Felt Cap
early 20th century

height 4-1/2 inches x diameter 7-1/4 inches

This cap, which was worn on social occasions, was made in the early part of this century.  It was given to Forrest in 1958 by an elderly Apache woman who said it had been made and used by her father.  Upon his death, the hat was retired to a shelf in her house and was not touched for many years.  A close inspection reveals an exterior that is much faded with time, while the interior remains pristine with the original strong, brown color of the felt looking new (Hanson 1994: 193).
