Mandan-Hidatsa Painted Wood Quirt
third quarter 19th century

having thick hide lashing coated in red pigment and embellished with light blue and red white-heart glass beads and red wool; sinew-sewn buffalo hide wrist strap

overall length 42 inches; length of quirt 19-3/4 inches

This quirt... was part of the regalia of the Mandan-Hidatsa Lumpwood Society, a warrior fraternity... red horse tracks on one side, to indicate successful horse-stealing raids, and diagonal stripes on the other side, to record coups counted on enemies (Hanson 1994: 39)
