Lot Description
Kiowa Hickory Bow
second half 19th century

notched on both ends

length 54-1/2 inches

The far-right bow is Kiowa. It is shown here from the belly side. It is made of hickory, a favorite wood often hauled in by traders from Missouri to the Plains tribes, who paid as much as a buffalo robe for a cured piece of hickory big enough for a bow. The dark area at the top end is a smoke stain.
