Lot Description
"Victoire" Dress, Galeries Lafayette,1930-40s
This dress captures the spirit of exuberance that enveloped Paris upon the conclusion of the Second World War. Embroidered on a white synthetic ground are the flags of the Allied Powers cascading around the French "Victoire", or "Victory" in English. The garment was retailed by Galeries Lafayette, an iconic Parisian department store, and perhaps later hand-embroidered by its wearer. Though its origins remain unknown, one imagines a young woman celebrating the end of war in Paris during the Fête de la Victoire in 1945.
White synthetic fiber dress with squared V neckline, set in long peasant sleeves, red and blue trim, with red and blue "Victoire" and flag embroidery, ruching detail along the shoulders and waist, and attached waist tie.
