A Pair of Japanese Inlaid Iron 'Komai' Vases
LATE 19TH CENTURY/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
each slender ovoid body finely worked throughout in the typical Komai-style of silver and gold overlay, the main panel decorated with two large roundels, one showing scholars seated amongst bamboo outside a house, the other with butterfly and dragonfly amongst flowering plants, all set on a dense ground with flower heads with ho-oh bird, crab, butterfly and bat; above a band of suspending leaf-form panels each filled with a pair of confronting dragons, against a diaper pattern ground; all between two narrow bands with foliate scrolls to the mount and the foot; signed on the side in gold Kyoto no ju Komai sei within a rectangular panel.
