Lot Description
[CHAMBERLAIN, Joshua Lawrence (1828-1914)]. Autograph letter signed ("J.L. Chamberlain"), as President of Bowdoin College. Brunswick, ME, 20 May 1872. [With]: Autograph cover, as Governor of Maine, to his wife. [Brunswick, ME], 17 June [ca 1867-70].
1 page, on Bowdoin College letterhead, minor toning to edges, mounted, matted and framed, not examined out of frame.
Chamberlain writes, "My dear Judge, I do not think much of the Greeley nomination. Least of all do I see in it any temptation for me to go into 'politics' again. I value your friendship, of which your letter is a testimonial & a test; but I must ask you to [indecipherable] any more risks for me at present. "
The recipient of the letter has not been confirmed, though Chamberlain appears to have written a name to the lower left.
[With:] Postally used "State of Maine, Executive Department" illustrated cover, 5 3/8 x 3 in. (rip and separation to left side and upper edge, ink staining). Addressed to "Mrs. F.C. Chamberlain, Stevens House, New York City, N.Y." Cancelled at Brunswick, ME on 17 June.
