Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. CASEY, Silas. Infantry Tactics, for the Instruction, Exercise, and Maneuvers of the Soldier, A Company, Line of Skirmishers, Battalion, Brigade, or Corps d'Armee. Vols. I, II, III.
Each identified to a New York soldier, incl. Lt. Isaac H. Dann, Co. A, 117th New York, KIA Cold Harbor and Col. Erastus D. Holt, Co. I, 49th New York,  DOW Petersburg.

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1862. 3 volumes, 12mo. Folding frontispiece to Vol. I, plates some folding, and printed music. (Toning, occasional brown spotting). Original dark green cloth, spines gilt-lettered (front joint starting on Vol. II, some spotting/staining).

A war-time edition of Casey's Infantry Tactics with the inscriptions of several soldiers. Vol. I inscribed to front fly leaf:  "Lieut. I. H. Dann / Co. A 117th regt N.Y.V. / Fort Franklin / Sept. 27th 1862." Isaac H. Dann enlisted on 8 August 1862 at Rome, NY as a 2nd lieutenant and was commissioned into Company A. He was promoted to captain on 19 May 1864 shortly before he was killed in action at Cold Harbor, VA on 4 July 1864. The rear fly leaf is signed "M.H. Brayton / Srgt. Mjr." who goes unidentified.

Vol. II inscribed to front fly leaf: "Capt. Henry Dawson / Co. C 139th Regt. / N.Y.V." Henry Dawson enlisted on 9 September 1862 in Brooklyn, NY as a private into Company C of the 139th New York and was discharged on 8 November 1863. No records of promotion suggesting that this rank was perhaps aspirational.

Vol. III inscribed to front fly leaf: "E.D. Holt / Capt. Co "I." 49th NYV". Erastus D. Colt enlisted on 4 September 1861 at Forestville, NY and was commissioned captain into Company I of the 49th New York Infantry. He was wounded in action twice during the Overland Campaign, first at Spotsylvania Court House on 12 May 1864, after which he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 27 July 1864 and then to colonel on 20 August 1864. He was wounded again at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and died of his wounds 5 days later at City Point, VA hospital.

Though from three different New York Regiments, the three were all present (though in different brigades and divisions) at the Battle of Cold Harbor and Second Petersburg.
