Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 31-star American parade flag. Ca 1850-1859.
36 x 22 in. cotton flag with 31 printed stars, configured in a double medallion surrounding a much larger central star, that is haloed in both blue and white, all flanked by medium sized corner stars. The fly consists of 13 printed stripes (toning, soiling and staining throughout, especially both sides of fly end, some fraying to edges and areas of loss to fly end, few small pinholes near hoist end). This rarely encountered flag commemorates the State of California, and was used from 1850 to 1859.
