Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. 35-star American flag. [With:] Partial flags and fragments of flags from the period.
100 x 69 in. hand-sewn and machine-sewn worsted wool flag with 35 hand-sewn, double-appliquéd cotton stars, arranged in 6-6-6-6-6-5 pattern (soiling and staining to flag, tears and holes throughout, large area of loss near center of flag). Hoist is cotton with two brass grommets (some soiling, few holes in hoist). The 35-star flag became official on 4 July 1863 after the admission of West Virginia into the Union on 20 June 1863. It only lasted for 2 years and was updated in 1865 after Nevada was admitted to the Union.
[With:] 4 partial, worsted wool American flags, many lacking all or most of the canton, as well as multiple fragments that have been cut from the flags, presumably to be used for display purposes.
