Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Confederate altered Model 1842 Springfield Musket dated-1851, captured at Siege of Vicksburg with original inscribed provenance tag from the Dr. William H.H. King museum in Illinois. 

About .69 caliber with a 33" smoothbore barrel. Item features a shortened stock and barrel configuration with single barrel band and bead front sight. Barrel shows no visible markings. Lock is marked with "{Eagle}/U.S." to center and "SPRING/FIELD/1851" to rear. Buttplate marked "U.S." to heel. Bore is dark. Finish has dark grey patina overall with scattered pitting and oxidation. Wood stock shows heavy scratching and mars overall, with some small losses and cracking around forearm. Wood to metal fit is good. Action is functional. Provenance: Dr. Wm. H.H. King Museum, Illinois (inscribed museum tag). 

Accompanying museum tag of provenance inscribed on front/back, "Musket, Springfield 1851, Confederate, Vicksburg, obtained by...Edward W. Payne (?) when he purchased the entire Dr. W.H.H. King Museum."
