Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Ames combination mess kit. Patented 1861. 

8 3/8 in. lg. steel and wood combination mess kit comprised of a combined spoon/knife utensil and interlocking fork utensil (some rusting and general wear and finish loss throughout). Spoon/knife utensil stamped "Ames' Patent / Sep 17. 1861 / Cast Steel." Fork stamped "Ames' Pa[ten]t / [S]ep 17. 1861" on handle and "Cast Steel" near neck. 


Fork features a button-top stud purposed to slide forward into a keyhole on the spoon/knife utensil along with a second stud designed to fit into a hole on the handle of the spoon/knife utensil in order to hold it in place. 

One of the scarcest combination mess kits made during the Civil War.
